Mosquito Pass

I'll be in Leadville about September 6-7 riding passes and other trails and roads in the area on a dual-sported XR650R. I haven't ridden this bike much and plan to start with Haggerman Pass and whatever other I can find and progress to Mosquito once I get the feel of my wheels on those surfaces. I noted the webmaster's (Mike?) words about getting injured on a high pass near Leadville, and I've heard there's at least one steep rocky descent on Mosquito, so here's my question:
Was it Mosquito or a different one, and if it was Mosquito, is the section so steep and loose as to prevent descending it slowly? I'll be riding solo unless someone in the area joins me, so there is a safety concern about routes that are really technical. I tried Mosquito from Leadville once on my heavier BMW, but turned back - softball sized rocks are not a good surface for that bike. Ironically, I did Black Bear on the same trip and had no trouble except at the steps, where I walked it. I think its overrated except at that spot.
Thanks for your answers. I'll go to Ouray from Leadville for the rest of the week to ride Engineer, Cinnamon, Poughkeepsie (again - too rocky?), Black Bear, Imogene, American Basin, Ophir and others, again, solo unless someone would like to join me.
BTY, My xrdualsport site is a hobby - no commercial affiliation. I've considered starting a forum for dual-sported dirt bikes, but that was before finding this place and I'm not into duplicating resources. I'm glad to see this need being fulfilled! I've added a link to this forum from my site.
Cheers!

Alamosa Area next weekend. Where to ride?

Hey y'all I'm gonna be in Alamosa at a campground next weekend with my wife. I'm bringing my XR650R and want to know where to ride. Her friends own the campground so I'm sure they will have some suggestions but I figured somebody on here may know of an awesome area. I have my bike plated so if I have to put on some road miles to get to and from the trail I don't necessarily mind. Also if any of you will be in the area send me an email and we will try to hook up. I have been flyin solo since none of my friends have bikes yet.

Hello all,
Great site you have going here, keep up the good work. I look forward to picking your brains from time to time as the weeks and months progress. I've just ordered my '04 XR650L, and expect it be available by the end of February. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
I'm going to be using it for both on and off road (probably about a 70%/30% mix.)
So, no questions yet, until I get it, and ride it for a while, just wanted to intro myself, and say thanks for the site.

I am thinking about rebuilding the engine on my 1994 xr650L. The engine has lost 15% of its original compression and I would like to recover the lost power. I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations on parts. Should I replace the head, pistons, rings, and seals, or can should I just replace my piston, rings and seals. any assistance would be apprectiated

Hi, I am new to the group, I found articles very interesting and helpful. I got my XR650L bike a couple months ago love the dual sport.
Trying to unleash a few more HP from it, I have installed K&N Filter, and removed smog stuff with IMS kit. That has made it run much smoother. I have the Dynojet Kit from Baja Designs, but it sounds like a major ordeal to install it, and tune the bike to work with it, may wait until i get a aftermarket pipe for that project. This bike is great on the street and good in the dirt as well. I also have a Cr500, which i have named the "The Beast" for it kicks butt in the dirt.

This past weekend I stopped at a garage sale and found a brand new Sand Pro paddle tire for only 25 bucks. I paid 65 for a new one from a store last year. What have you found for your bike at garage sales?

Any TN Riders out there?

Hi all,
Just starting out, so sorry for the dumb questions. I was thinking about getting a 650L, but was hoping you guys could answer a few questions.
Can you ride with a passenger? Are there extra foot pegs for a second rider, or if not, can you add them.
Are there any small luggage racks you can add for packs and gear?
Can you kick start the bike if the electric start isn't working?
Any riders around Nashville?
Thanks

NEED FRAME FOR XR 600

I need a frame that will work for a 96 xr600r. I know that honda had the same frame for several years. My buddy got in an accident (he is fine) and twisted the goose neck. Thanks in advance to all who reply. We want to get him going again so he does not forget how to ride!

$23 at dealer. Ouch! Any other outlets on internet? I figure this is the problem since gas runs out of overflow tube when valve is turned on. Haven't disassembled carb yet.
