I'm new to this forum and would really appreciate some help regarding my bike. Just so I don't seem like a weekend warrior,,,, I'm a certified auto/diesel tech and maintain all of my bikes myself. Having said that,, I'm having a problem with the clutch shifter seal that is located on the generator cover. I've taken the cover off and replaced the seal once while inspecting the condition of all the parts and didn't find any wear to needle bearing or shaft. This bike only has 2100 miles and very good compression with no real noticable blow-by. The bike does have an IMS baja kit and rejet from the previous owner (air pump removal, rejet, fmf pipe, hoses rerouted) I've double checked the hose routing to insure that the crankcase is not building any pressure but can't seem to fiqure out while this seal keeps leaking. Has anyone ran across this problem before? Does the recessed oil gallery located in the block behind the generator cover actually feed pressure to this shaft???? Any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

icon9.gif  Shifting problem into 5th gear Wed, 28 July 2004 21:49 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hello I have a 2001 XR650L and last night I was driving down the highway and when I went to shift into 5th gear all that happened was the engine revved up and I had no drive. I first thought my chain came off. Well after a little checking I find that in fact I do have a 5th gear and it does work but I have to pull up very hard on the shifter to get it into gear and when I want to shift back down I have to push real hard. It kind of clunks back down into 4th. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with this bike and is there an easy way to fix it? I have the manual for this bike and as far as I can tell it looks like I would have to crack the case open and I am not sure I want to do this till the season is over. Do you think this would cause more problems if I continue riding it like it is?

Jetting for San Juans & Colorado Plateau Sat, 14 August 2004 17:07 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I live in Central IL. I'll be riding my XR650R mostly in the San Juans, CO, and around Moab, UT, for two weeks. Central IL jetting is obviously out.

I've asked my mechanic to jet it for 8,000 feet thinking it would be a reasonable compromise between higher passes around Leadville and Ouray, and the lower elevations of the Colorado Plateau around Moab (4K-8K feet). I'm not uncorked at the muffler but I have a stage I jet kit w HRC manifold and K&N filter.

Any opinions? Should I stop at a shop and have it rejetted for Moab after I leave Ouray?

Thanks,

Steve

I am looking to get more out my 2005 xr650l with exhaust, and carb upgrades, I would appreciate any feed back from anyone who knows the right way to go about this and what are the best products to buy and where to buy them. I hear that the carb setup is very sensitive to changes so I want to do this the right way and get the most out of my bike...thanx

Counter Shaft Play Tue, 05 October 2004 04:00 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I just bought a used 650r and there is a lot of play in the countershaft. It is not the bearings as there is no lateral movement. I optomistically don't think it is the transmission either, because it is equal in all the gears. I tend to think it may just be the clutch. I am still waiting on the shop manual I ordered, but if anyone has had this problem I would appreciate any notes.

Air Pressure for DS tires off-road Sun, 01 May 2005 20:10 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hey fellows-

I've got a Dunlop Trailmax on the rear and a Pirelli Scorpion on the front, notably cuz I live in the mountains and will be commuting to the plains on frequently wet &/or sandy canyon roads and I just don't trust knobbies on tar in those conditions. Bike is an XR650R.

Was wondering if anyone has some thoughts on what tire pressure to use front/rear when trail riding on dual sport tires...

Also, anybody ever had their cycle tires "Siped"? (was pretty happy with the Siping on the Dunlops I run on my Syncro Vanagon Westphalia)
Siping in a process where the tire lugs are cut across the tire about 1/2" apart all the way around. Supposedly it disperses heat faster (increasing life) and provides better traction. Available at Discount Tires (not much in the way of a 'discount')and perhaps other places..

Does anyone have a spreadsheet of add-on's they bought to help tranform a stock 2003 XL650r into a more adventure bike.

Ie: Racks for back and sides.
Larger gas tank
Exhaust stuff
Instrument panel add ons

Anything would help.

modifications for XLR/XR-L 250 Tue, 25 October 2005 14:49 Go to previous messageGo to next message
guys i need some help about modifying my bike. im from the philippines and can't seem to find any store here that sells mod parts for my bike. and yeah i ride a beat up 250 but its still a great first dirtbike. Smile i bought my 1987 XLR 9 months ago, second hand, and unbelievably everything is stock. so far i have only changed the handlebars and added twin headlights sourced from an old honda sportbike. heres a pic of my bike: http://photobucket.com/albums/b253/...nt=baja0012.jpg

what i want to know is what can i change to make it perform much better in trails. im kinda low on budget but im willing to do these changes if it is worth it.

by the way im planning to change my sprockets, anyone here who can give me the best sprocket combo for trails and flatland.

your help is greatly appreciated.
